Summer Olympics 1968, African American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos won the gold and bronze medals respectively in the 200 meter.
During the medal ceremony both sprinters went shoeless to bring awareness to poverty and raised a black gloved hand to show support for the black power movement and oppressed peoples globally.
All the medalists, including Australian silver medal winner Peter Norman received condemnation and backlash at the time.
