Mexico City, 1968

from $25.00

Summer Olympics 1968, African American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos won the gold and bronze medals respectively in the 200 meter.

During the medal ceremony both sprinters went shoeless to bring awareness to poverty and raised a black gloved hand to show support for the black power movement and oppressed peoples globally.

All the medalists, including Australian silver medal winner Peter Norman received condemnation and backlash at the time.

At salty radish we believe in supporting causes and organizations that align with our values.  To that end we created this shirt to commemorate these brave athletes’ stance speaking truth to power and will donate 100% of the profits from the sale of each shirt ($15) to the African American Museum of Iowa.

available on a unisex white tee (Gildan 5000).
